The Open Space Music Festival was a truly inspirational event! We had hundreds of visitors who listened to music, watched blacksmithing, played Newlin Grist Mill games, and had a fantastic time. Oh yes, and it also raised a lot of money for open space conservancy in southern Pennsylvania, which is always a good cause.
I worked mostly at the NGM info table and at the Newlin Grist Mill nature games section. We had two mill stone puzzles (we encouraged more than a few couples and sets of siblings to engage in a friendly race to see who could complete the puzzle faster) and some bird and egg matching games that were quite popular. I even learned a bit about some of the dozens of species of birds we have here, my favorite being the Red-Tailed Hawk.
Seeing how much work the NGM staff and volunteers put into putting on this event really put into perspective what goes into putting on seemingly effervescent events. The festival was there one day and gone the next, but Tony and the rest of the staff were dedicated to ensuring that the event was fun for the attendees and successful in its mission. We all hit a few bumps along the way, but that work really paid off, and every bump was a great learning opportunity. Here's to more events that bring us closer to our local community and wider audiences!
